The innovative Cambridge Cancer Centre was launched on 22 June 2007 at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Research Institute.

The Centre, supported by the University of Cambridge and Cancer Research UK, is a virtual organisation which has been established to bring together researchers in the Cambridge area whose work has current or potential application for the depth and breadth of cancer research.

Cancer Research UK will, via the Centre, provide funds for collaborative projects between inter-disciplinary Cambridge-based groups, allowing the scientists to work together on new and innovative cancer-focussed projects.

The launch was marked by a symposium featuring leading Cambridge-based cancer researchers working the fields of biochemistry, physics, engineering, molecular biology, chemistry and epidemiology. The diversity of fields and the quality of science discussed resulted in a stimulating and inspirational day for all who attended.

Keynote speaker, Professor David Livingston who was instrumental in the establishment of the comprehensive Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, USA, spoke authoritatively about the benefits and potential hurdles involved with establishing such an initiative.

The Institute, on behalf of the Cambridge Cancer Centre welcomes scientists and medical professionals at all levels from the University of Cambridge, Addenbrooke's Hospital, the Cambridge University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Cambridge-based research institutes and research companies, to closely participate in the Cambridge Cancer Centre.
